Bronze inscriptions (金文) belong to the great seal script (大篆) family, and they preceded the oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文) by approximately 100 years.
Bronze inscriptions went through a few stages of development, and their origins go back to the last years of Xia Dynasty (夏朝, 2070 - 1600 B.C.E.)
