Here is my another photoshop manipulation fun, this time I wanted to keep it simple and the composite is not as complex as the previous one, but I think the message is pretty strong, and that was the intention.Photoshop manipulations can be quite time consuming, but are a lot of fuin and a great way to push further your photoshop skills. I learn more during compositing then during any photo retouching. New techniques, new tricks, etc. Photoshop manipulations are great for learning light, composition and coloring.

Hire a photographer in Tokyo Well, the time has come to spring clean mt calligraphy works stash, and I say, I have not realised how much I have written for the past 13 years. I spent a few hours selecting works that have to go, and there is a huge pile of paper in my room now and it is destined for a dust bin. In the past, calligraphers burned their works in special shrines, but these days I am not sure if there are any left around my house. I often use old works as blotting paper, but I have a stack of it already so the trash can is goingbe fed with lots of expensive paper and hours and hours of studies. Irony of life: what once you thought was important and valuable becomes a pile of ash later on. Still, every cloud has a silver lining, so the good thing is that one can verify the improvement and advancement in skill.

Well, I decided to finally reveal my secret, and document myself during work. As you can see from this genuine and not altered in any way whatsoever photograph, I am an alien species. Whenever my brain activity reaches certain level, my arms split into 4 and then 6, and dormant processors are being activated in my half synthetic body, one for each arm. Consequently, I can do 6x more work as any human being, because each arm can operate and "think" independently. So, do not try to chase after me or catch up, it is humanly impossible. Instead, simply enjoy my creations. Ryuurui out. Beep...disconnecting...end of transmission.
Although I passed the exam for the Jun Shihan (準師範) on June, I have just officially received the certificate from my calligraphy teacher, Grand Master Kajita Esshuu, which was issued by the All Japan Calligraphy and Literature Association (全日本芸文化院). Jun Shihan is often translated into English as New Master and it is a huge honor to receive it. I am already preparing for my last exam next year, the Master Instructor, which will give me right to open a private Japanese calligraphy school anywhere in the world, including Japan, and teach the art of Japanese calligraphy under the umbrella of All Japan Calligraphy and Literature Association. Below, I am posting a scan of the certificate (left), and my teacher's handwritten memo on the envelope in which the certificate was included. I am posting his writing, as I thought it might be interesting for you guys to see how does a every-day handwriting of a great Japanese calligraphy Master looks like.
In this photoshop tutorial I will show you how to create an action in photoshop, and then how to use a photoshop action to add metadata to your photos. Photoshop actions are extremely powerful tools, and can automate a lot of mundane work, and repetitive tasks that you would normally have to perform manually. I use photoshop actions mainly for adding metadata to my pictures, but I used to apply actions that were adding watermarks, sharpened my photos and resized them with one click. Actions are a must learn thing if you want to improve and speed up your workflow in photoshop. I spend anywhere between 4 to 12h (or even longer) editing photos nearly every day, depending on how much work I have, and I do a lot of manual editing of my without certain procedures being automated I would simply be unable to accomplish so much within one day. Hire a photographer in Tokyo I love the fusion of that is ancient and traditional with what is modern. There are not many types of art, which would be so sophisticated and so ancient as the art of Chinese calligraphy, Japanese calligraphy was derived from the former around 5th century C.E. The history of Chinese calligraphy, on the other hand, is monumental, and goes ca. 7000 years back (see my articles on the Yangshao culture markings in Neolithic China). My daily studies of calligraphy are based on more "modern" classics, no older that 3600 years. This calligraphy was written with a huge marker pen on a paper, brought into photoshop, and I added some textures to it, and post processed the entire image. Kanji: 速 / meaning: speed.

In this video I am showing you my entire workflow of fine art black and white photo conversion in photoshop. This is a sped up video, but even so it is easy to follow and understand all the steps. I am using pen tool for selections and blending 3 different exposures, then I am adjusting colours and contrast, and finally I add two small birds to the photo, so you can see some elements of composite photography. Last steps are a conversion into black and white in Silver Efex Pro and I add a vignette. If you are into black and white photography, I have yet another video tutorial on the subject, with commentaries. Hire a photographer in Tokyo To take a blurry photo is easy, but to take a blurry photo that looks good is much more difficult. The key to a good blur photography is to have thing in focus before you blur them. I know it sounds like a paradox, but blurry and out of focus are two different things. Secondly, you need to have a decent composition, and since everything will be blurred, thus abstract, it has to be a good composition of light and tones. In fact, blur photography is a fantastic way of studying composition and understanding light, and a good way to train your eye to see the world in tones, and not in shapes. After all, it is the light that creates shapes, and without light, everything is black. Below photo is a blurred image of flowers, growing in a concrete pot in one of the parks in my area. I was passing by, flowers were beautifully backlit, so i snapped a few shots, and I quite like this one.

It also stands for enthusiasm and zeal. This very calligraphy can be found in one of my books, and more precisely in my poetry book, the Soul Nova, together with two other works of mine. The book has three chapters and each of them is opened by one of my calligraphy art works, though they are all black on a white background. I gave this calligraphy a new look by adding some colours. Passion and zeal is always associated with energy, power, and spirit. Bright warm and strong colours fit perfectly, I also added movement and kinetic energy symbolising spinning mind and soul.

In most cases, brush tool is used for masking in photoshop, and brushing with white or black colour on the layer mast to reveal or conceal the layer below. Brush is also used for skin retouching, also for dodging and burning, and so on. However, it can also be used for removing unwanted items from a photo, in places and instances when the content aware tools and clone stamp tool fail to do the job. In this photoshop tutorial I will show you how you can use the brush in conjunction with layer blend modes to remove things that have to go from your photo, and improve the impact the and the composition of your shot. Hell no. Photography, like every art, has certain rules. Picasso said, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist". And he could not be more correct. The true art starts when you gain the ability of looking beyond the fingers, beyond what other people can’t see, but when they do they like it and find it appealing. It is the knowledge of art, creativity and imagination that bring those visions to life. Using the language learning example here, once you start thinking in a foreign language, it is when you truly understand it. Now, in art, you need to learn how to think in visions. You need to be able to see what is not there. You see what you make on top of or from what you can see. I remember watching a very interesting interview with a great photo retoucher Natalia Taffarel, who said that one can become the master of photoshop tools, but that does not make him or her the master of using them in an artistic way. You have to unlock yourself. I took this photo in Odaiba yesterday, it is a blend of two exposures, one was zoom-blurred, and the other was sharp. I combined them both, edited them, then applied radial blur, and just masked in the middle.

This time I am giving you guys a simple tip on levels adjustment layer, and how to use them in conjunction with masking and digital blending. Recently I create more and more fully manual HDR images, I still use Photomatix and HDR efex pro 2, but not as often as I used to. It seems that manual blending, although more time consuming, produces (most of the time) better results or me. Levels in photoshop is a simple but very powerful tool, just like curves. I use levels and curves when editing nearly every photo. It is good to know how it works. Enjoy the video! I wrote this Chinese calligraphy some time ago, but I gave it a new look today in photoshop. Both characters are in ancient seal script, which is the oldest script in Chinese calligraphy, and also the most complex one. I gave those characters a slightly modern look, though I realise that it might be difficult to spot for anyone who is not familiar with seal script. Top character is 陽 and the bottom one is 陰, and their meaning is Yang (Sun), and Yin (shadow).

Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion (蘭亭集序, Lantingji Xu) by , Wang Xianzhi (王獻之, 344 – 386) is possibly the best known and most cherished Chinese calligraphy classics ever written. I have written a bit more about it on the Ink Treasures website, of which I am the co-creator, in the section regarding the history of Chinese semi-cursive script. Lantingji Xu is a very difficult text to copy, and for those of you who do not know this, copying classics is the main and the most proper way of studying Chinese calligraphy. In this short video I am writing only a fragment of this beautiful classic, full of meaningful phrases and idioms. Full text translation can be found on Wikipedia, here. I made this movie for a reason. It is not often that I write calligraphy with a small brush, so it can be a good chance to see a different way of brush handling. In this photoshop tutorial I will show you how you can easily combine texture of what is in a photograph, with any text. Most of photoshop users knows how to use the text tool, but in this video I will teach you a few cool tricks that will make any added text look really cool. By embedding the very texture of what is in a photo with the shape of the text, new tools and possibilities open and you can use your creativity to personalise any caption that you want to add to the picture. This tutorial is short and not difficult so even if you are a photoshop beginner you should have no problems with following it. I can be serious for a reasonable amount of time, but then I can help it and I have to dive back into madness. All my life I was wondering why I do not fit any social frames and rules, and once I realised that art is my calling, everything fell into place. We go against what is normal for a reason, it stimulates our imagination and creativity by locking us inside a bubble of emotional intimacy and aloofness. Not many people can understand artists, which is why most of us lead solitary life. The world we create in our minds is so rich and vivid, that we do not even notice what is going on around us. So here it is, another portrait shot by my wife the other day, which I tuned a bit in photoshop to give it a proper punch. And remember, if someone tells you that you are mad, it is either because they are jealous, or because they are too blind too see the true face of sanity. Stay mad as a hat!
In this video I will show you my full workflow of how I deal with complex backlit cityscape photos. I am editing photo that contains 3 levels of depth: city at the back, bridge half way between the city and the camera, and a view deck with people just in front of me. In addition the photo is backlit during sunset hours. I will be dealing with ghosting, manual digital blending from a few exposures, removing unwanted objects with clone stamp tool and healing brush, using some content aware fill, too. I will be changing colours and saturating the photo selectively, using pen tool, and other selection tools. I will also work in Lightroom and Photoshop together, and finish it all off with some filters from Topaz and Nik (current Google software). I created this short clip today to show those of you who study Chinese or Japanese calligraphy the brush flow during and in between the brush strokes in semi-cursive script. If you are not acquainted with the concept of unbroken line, I strongly suggest you read and watch my other video tutorials on the subject. It is absolutely essential not only for semi-cursive script studies, but Chinese or Japanese calligraphy in general. The classic I write in this video is composed out of characters written by the calligraphy sage, Wang Xizhi, of the Jin Dynasty in China. Enjoy!
